A plea.

So I came back to Male' for hols and met up with some of my YLP friends. The meeting went great except for this one discussion which shocked me utterly.
It started with the discussion about 15 year old girl who was flogged recently in Maldives. It went on to a horrifying story about how one of my friends was labelled as an infidel just for standing up for this girl in her Islam class... on to how a single father refused to shower his own baby and how some people pointedly keep posting stuff encouraging such things on fb. Today  my 6 year old cousin comes home from school and tells me to stop talking. I ask her why and she replies, "My teacher said naraka (hell) would have mostly women, because women talk too much nonsense. You shouldn't talk too much I'm scared you might go to hell." Seriously, from a SIX year old, I swear!

So respected teachers,  leaders,  politicians, dear parents... Before our kids are scarred for life, before they grow on to be women without courage or bravery  and men incapable of humility or humanity, before our society goes on to be worse than it is today.. Please, stop.

Stop telling little kids that women would go to hell if they talk.  Stop creating a monstrous image of people from other religions in their head, our religion tells us to respect them too. And please, for the love of god stop telling them to not laugh and not have fun, they are kids.. laughing and having fun is what they are supposed to do. Please stop calling people (your students included!) infidels, you do not have the right. Please stop creating fear, hatred and jealousy. We adults have enough of it already, those kids might be the only hope for this country.

Besides,
To you is your Religion and to me is mine. (Qur'an 109:06)
Don't judge others, just make sure you are a good person yourself. Live and let live.

Before the rains..

I wish you could see
The place where I was free
I wish you could see
Me when I was happy
I think you would have liked me

I wish you could live
The times I wasn't as pensive
I wish you could live
The day I had nothing to forgive
I think you would have liked me

I wish you had known me,
Before life drained me,
I wish I had known you,
Before I lost faith in people.
You would have liked me.

I wish you could have laughed
With me, till the day faded
Seen how carefree I was
Before darkness took over
You would have liked me

I wish you could have heard,
The music in my heart,
Felt the way I loved,
Before it was wrenched out of me
I think would have liked me

I wish you could know that girl
Who was once brave and beautiful
That girl who didn't know of malice or jealousy
Or pain, evil or life's cruelty
I think, that girl would have blown you away.

I wish she could have known you,
Seen the love in your eyes,
The kindness in your heart,
And the hope in your smile
I know she'd have fallen in love with you a million times over.

I wish you could understand
When people fail you so much,
When life disappoints you to no end,
How it could break a heart beyond repair.

Happy day, happy thoughts!

Today is one of those few days I felt truly like my usual happy, crazy self since moving here. Ramazan is over and today is eid so we went to galle face to have fun. I flew kites with the kids and it was sooooo much fun. After that we rested on the beach and had delicious cornetto. There were beautiful breezes and there were birds and colorful kites in the sky. As I sat there on the beach and watched the kids play, and the adults trying to feel comfortable on those blankets while they ate.. I felt thankful for being there.

I do not have the perfect everything. It might seem perfect but no, my life is not perfect. There are tough times and happy days like today. I don't have even half of everything I want.

But I realize that it could have been worse. I dont have everything but the little things I have make me so happy. Like nail polish and pretty hair bows. My family might not be the perfect family, but dad sent me chocolates and they make me happy. My aunts, uncles and cousins are soooo crazy that they make me scream sometimes but they are fun and they love me a lot. And above all, I'm with an amazing person and he makes me the happiest. Sooo... LOTS of things to be thankful for.

Here is a million silent thanks heavenwards.
